Water and Waste Water Treatment Sector Overview

The wastewater treatment sector in India is one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. The sector has seen tremendous growth in the past few years and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 10% during the period 2022-2026. The industry is mainly driven by the increasing awareness about the importance of wastewater treatment, rising population and urbanization, and stringent government regulations.

The Indian government is also taking various initiatives to promote the growth of the wastewater treatment sector in the country. In June 2017, the government launched the Ganga Action Plan (GAP) to clean the river Ganga. The government has also announced plans to set up a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in every city with a population of more than 1 million by 2030.

The rising population and urbanization are some of the key factors driving the growth of the wastewater treatment sector in India. According to UNICEF, the urban population in India is expected to grow from 377 million in 2016 to 600 million by 2030. This will lead to an increase in the demand for wastewater treatment facilities in the country.

Use of Pumps in the Water and Waste Water Treatment Sector:

Pumps are essential to any wastewater treatment plant, as they are responsible for moving liquids through the system. The type of pump used will depend on the plant’s specific needs. For example, a plant that treats large volumes of sewage will need a different type of pump than a plant that treats smaller volumes of water. There are many different manufacturers of pumps, so it is essential to do some research to find the best pump for your specific needs.

There are many different types of pumps used in the wastewater treatment sector. The most common type of pump is the centrifugal pump. This type of pump is used to move liquids through a piping system by using a rotating impeller to create centrifugal force. Centrifugal pumps are often used to move large volumes of water or sewage through a treatment plant.

Other types of pumps that are commonly used in the wastewater sector include positive displacement pumps and submersible pumps. Positive displacement pumps work by displacing a certain amount of liquid with each stroke, while submersible pumps are designed to be submerged in the liquid being pumped. WATER REMOVAL

Pumps are extensively used to remove water from wells or other sources. Depending on the source and the volume of water to be handled, various pumps are employed.

TRANSFER WASTEWATER

Pumps can be used to transfer wastewater from one location to another. They provide the required pumping power to draw domestic and industrial wastewater into the treatment plants.

PROVIDE LIFT

Pumps are extensively used to provide lift, which is necessary for some processes in wastewater treatment, such as aeration. The water is taken to a certain height using the power produced by the pump.

CIRCULATE FLUIDS

Pumps can be used to circulate fluids in a system, such as in a closed-loop system. The wastewater plants are a labyrinth of pipes and pumps to ensure the water reaches different sections.

TREAT WASTEWATER

The wastewater collected from various sources is treated by aeration, zonation, or other means. Pumps are used to manage the water and move them through these stages.

DISINFECT WATER

Once the wastewater undergoes various treatments, it needs to be disinfected so that the harmful chemicals are removed. Pumps can be used to disinfect water using chlorine or other disinfectants.

DEWATER SLUDGE

Pumps can be used to dewater sludge, which is a solid waste product of wastewater treatment. The sludge is then handled separately in the wastewater treatment plant.

RECIRCULATE WATER

Pumps can be used to recirculate water in a system, such as in an open-loop system. The clean water is pumped into various channels where it can be reused.
